Australian Citizenship

Australian citizenship is a great provillage and a pathway which may be available to you. You can become an Australian Citizen through different ways. Your eligibility is determined by personal circumstances.

PURPOSE OF THE CITIZENSHIP: Australian Citizenship gives the applicant equal rights to fellow Australian citizens in legal terms. Basically Australian citizenship gives the right to health, education, full rights to work, government assistance (if necessary), among other benefits as well as the citizens who were born here.

1. Permanent Residents or New Zealand Citizens

This pathway is suitable for:

● Australian permanent residents aged 18-59

● Children aged 16 or 17

● Children 15 years or younger applying with a parent or guardian

● Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme migrants

● Eligible New Zealand citizens

● Partners or spouses of an Australian citizen

● Refugees or humanitarian migrants

Requirements:

● Be a permanent resident or a New Zealander for at least 12 months Citizen by the time you apply for an Australian Citizenship

● Not be away from Australia for more than 12 months in total in the past 4 years required to be in Australia to apply for the Citizenship, including no more than 90 days in total in the past 12 months.

● Reside in Australia

● Have spent time in Australia for 4 years (unless exempt)

● General knowledge about Australia

● Be of a good character

● Meet English language requirements

● Intend to live in Australia or at least have a link with Australia when overseas

2. applicants over the age of 60

This pathway is suitable for:

● Permanent residents aged 60 years or over

● Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme migrants

● Eligible New Zealand citizens

● Partners or spouses of an Australian citizen

● Refugees or humanitarian migrants

Requirements:

● Be a permanent resident or a New Zealander for at least 12 months Citizen by the time you apply for an Australian Citizenship

● Not be away from Australia for more than 12 months in total in the past 4 years required to be in Australia to apply for the Citizenship, including no more than 90 days in total in the past 12 months.

● Be in Australia when the Department of Home Affairs decide to grant the citizenship (applied to most cases)

● Must be 60 or older to apply

● Be of a good character

● Have knowledge about Australia

● Intend to live in Australia or at least have a link with Australia when overseas

3. citizenship by descent

Stream: People born overseas but their parents were Australians Citizen by the time they born (Citizenship by Descent)

This pathway works for:

● People who born overseas or were registered overseas but have parents who are Australian Citizens

Requirements:

● Have been born outside Australia

● Having parents Australian Citizen by the time they have born

● Be of a good character if 18 years old or older
