MIGRANT WORKER PROTECTIONS

Jan 17, 2025 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Australia is one of the countries that receives the most international immigrants and workers to fill the needs of the labour market.

These international workers have protection provisions against labour exploitation and legislation that safeguards them.

A recent article from the South Australian Government lists examples of worker exploitation

“Workplace exploitation includes a range of behaviours from the employer or others in the labour chain. For example, it is against the law for the employer to:

  • underpay migrants
  • pressure migrants to hand over their passport
  • threaten to cancel a visa (employers cannot cancel visas)
  • pressure to work more hours than visa conditions allow
  • pressure to engage in unwanted sexual acts
  • pressure to accept poor living conditions, such as inadequate housing or lack of access to running water or electricity.”

The protection provisions include fines and jail to those who commit these crimes.

To make an anonymous report on worker exploitation, individuals can contact Fair Work Ombudsman or Border Watch
