The new National Innovation Visa – A Summary

As of 6 December 2024, the National Innovation Visa (NIV) has replaced the Global Talent Visa as part of a broader strategy to attract exceptional individuals who have an internationally recognised record of achievement in certain sectors.

Overview

The NIV is for established and emerging leaders who can make significant contribution in the following fields:

  1. Global researchers
  2. Entrepreneurs
  3. Innovative investors
  4. Athletes and creatives 

Application process and requirements

The application process has been streamlined to enhance efficiency. The Department must invite you before you can apply for the visa and to be considered, an Expression of Interest must be submitted to show achievements.

The Department will extend invitations in the following priority order:

  1. Priority one – exceptional candidates from any sector who are global experts and recipients of ‘top of field’ level awards
  2. Priority two – candidates from any sector nominated on the approved form 10000 by an expert of the Australian Commonwealth, State or Territory agency
  3. Priority three – candidates with exceptional and outstanding achievements in a Tier one sector, including, Critical technologies, health industries and renewable and low emission technologies
  4. Priority four – candidates with exceptional and outstanding achievements in a Tier Two sector, including, Agrifood, Defence Capabilities and Space, Education, Financial Services and FinTech, Infrastructure and Transport and Resources

How to Apply in 3 Steps:

  1. Submit Your EOI: Share your achievements and ensure a nominator vouches for your exceptional talent.
  2. Receive an Invitation: Invitations are valid for 60 days, so act quickly once you’re in!
  3. Complete Your Visa Application: Pay the fee (AUD 4,840+), upload your documents, and submit online.
