The release of the Outline ‘A Migration System for a More Prosperous and Secure Australia – Outline of the Government’s Migration Strategy’ by the Hon Clare O’Neil MP on the 27th April 2023, marked a turning point in Australia due to the intention to overhaul the entire migration. Informed by the Migration Review, the Outline identified key areas for overhaul including but not limited to changes to Labour Market Testing, a three-tiered approach for skilled migration and greater access to permanent residency for migrants.
During the Migration Institute of Australia National Conference held in Sydney today on the 12th October, the Department of Home Affairs announced that Migration Strategy is in the consultation phase with ongoing discussions taking place with key stakeholders. The Strategy and final documents are planned for release later in 2023.
The Strategy will outline key action points in a number of areas such as exploitation of workers, migration planning numbers and allocations, changes to student visas, regional and skilled migration.
The Labour Government has confirmed that they are willing to improve the way our government addresses migration in order to provide a better experience for migrants in addition to meeting Australia’s needs for industries. We expect to see changes such as changing how we select permanent skilled migrants to focus on factors that best contribute to lifting Australia’s productivity, participation, and addressing our aging population challenges, all while building a new, simplified pathway to attract the migrants we need to drive innovation.
Crystal Migration Legal Services will be sending out alerts as further announcements are made, including but not limited to enactments to legislation.
