The Australian Government has released a new migration strategy which outlines key actions with an emphasis on the education sector and temporary skilled migration.
A temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) is a visa for eligible international students to live, study, and work in Australia after graduation. Upcoming changes for the 485 visa:
1. New English requirement
– The test score required for a 485 visa will increase from an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score (or equivalent) to 6.5.
2. Reducing the length of Temporary graduate visas to:
– Bachelor’s degree or Master’s Degree: 2 years
– Master’s by research or PhD: 3 years;
– Students in regional areas: eligibility for second visa of 1-2 years in length depending on location.
3. Age limit
– Applicants will need to be under the age of 35 (as opposed to the current age limit of 50).
4. Post study work extension
– Initial Temporary Graduate Visa duration will be shorter.
– Extension available only for those who completed education in a regional area.
Overall, the new rules enable better transition to permanent residency and highlights a significant shift in Australia’s approach to education and migration.
