The Department of Home Affairs requires certain visa applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency. This helps manage immigration risk and ensures visa holders can fully engage in Australian society.

Evidence of English ability must come from approved tests conducted at secure testing centres. Tests may be computer-based or paper-based, depending on the provider.

Changes to Approved English Tests

From 7 August 2025, the list of English language tests accepted for Australian visa purposes has been updated. If you completed a test before this date, your results may still be valid for up to three years, depending on the visa subclass. Applicants should check the required English scores, acceptable evidence, and test eligibility timeframes.

Tests Taken on or After 7 August 2025

The department accepts results from the following tests, conducted at secure test centres:

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced (C1 Advanced)
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program General (CELPIP General)
  • IELTS Academic, including One Skill Retake (OSR)
  • IELTS General Training, including One Skill Retake (OSR)
  • LANGUAGECERT Academic Test
  • Michigan English Test (MET), including Single Section Retake (SSR)
  • Occupational English Test (OET)
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT)

Tests Taken on or Before 6 August 2025

For tests completed on or before 6 August 2025, the following scores remain accepted for visa purposes until 6 August 2028 (subject to visa subclass):

  • Cambridge English (CAE), also known as C1 Advanced
  • IELTS, including One Skill Retake (OSR)
  • PTE Academic
  • OET (for health professionals)
